Letter from the President

We’re closing in on the end of the 2015-16 ASHRAE season. The February chapter meeting will be the final “regular” meeting, followed by tour night in March, and awards night in April. Of course, we’ll also have the ASHRAE Annual Meeting here in St. Louis June 25-29 this year.

We’re excited to see the scholarship applications this year. We have the strongest student chapter activity I’ve seen since joining the Chapter Board. In addition to the usual high-level of engagement from the SIU-E and MS&T, we finally have a stable student chapter at MU. Again, thanks goes to Danny McGrail and his predecessors in the Student Activities Committee.

The Board has begun discussions regarding replacement of the Chapter By-Laws with the most current version acceptable to Society. We anticipate approving the new By-Laws before the end of the 2015-16 season. The biggest change: a requirement to maintain a Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee. January Meeting Features “R in ASHRAE”

The Chapter met for two presentations in January surrounding the “R in ASHRAE” theme. First, Tom Mathews presented on “Refrigeration 401” and provided a summary of opportunities to improve energy efficiency for refrigeration systems, as well as an in-depth review regarding the effects of system components and selection in refrigeration design. Then, Keilly Witman presented on “What to Expect from an EPA Inspection,” which included probable causes and outcomes of an EPA inspection for refrigeration systems. She also talked about the importance of refrigerant management and accurate record keeping for the legal impacts of these inspections. Thank you to both presenters!

History Update

Our Chapter Historian, Annie Smith, is making progress in digitizing our historical files. These can be accessed via our website here going forward. We have recently recycled a good portion of old texts that no longer have use in industry or historical value. Certain memorabilia that cannot be digitized will be kept and stored properly as well. If you would like to be involved in our Chapter’s history efforts, email ashraestl@gmail.com.
