It is tradition for the Host Committee of each ASHRAE conference to coordinate a local sustainability project to highlight at their conference. This summer in St. Louis, the project that will be highlighted benefits a local charity called Beverly Farms. The ASHRAE Community Sustainability Project Program is designed to share the engineering knowledge of our members to improve the world around them.
Beverly Farms is a “home for adults with developmental disabilities and provides each individual with physical and emotional security and a dignified quality of life, with opportunities and challenges, within each individual’s functional capabilities” (http://www.beverlyfarm.org/). They were founded in 1897 and are located in Godfrey, Illinois.
This project was unique in that ASHRAE students from the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) gained a hands-on experience in the design of the project. The project began with a building assessment of the Chappee Cottage Residential Building on the campus of Beverly Farms. The original systems included a multi-zone system with radiant floor heating and an inefficient boiler system.
The students helped to analyze three HVAC options and investigated ways to help the client save energy, such as building envelope upgrades, improved windows, efficient lighting, and better controls. The resulting decision for the project includes four zones with split systems and a dedicated outside air system utilizing demand-controlled ventilation. The heating water system includes two redundant boilers with hot water temperature reset. Local zone pumps are controlled based on space temperature.
