Letter from the President

This November’s meeting is dedicated to Membership Promotion. I’d first like to extend thanks to our current Membership Promotion Chair: Grant Irvine.  Grant’s already doing a great job with current Chapter paid membership at 697 members as of 10/27/15. I prefer nice round numbers, like 700 (or even 800), so let’s help Grant get us past that milestone.

By promoting ASHRAE membership, you’re not just helping our chapter grow, you’re helping your friends and colleagues benefit from ASHRAE. Our St. Louis Chapter has already brought two Distinguished Lecturers to speak (including Bill Bahnfleth, a Past President of ASHRAE Society), and has much more in store for educational opportunities this season. If the educations opportunities aren’t enough, consider that our chapter meetings regularly see more than 100 attendees, including many local industry leaders. Our attendance is top-notch amongst the chapters in our region; be sure to use the networking opportunities to your advantage.

If you’re not convinced by the benefits of ASHRAE membership available from the St. Louis Chapter, consider the many benefits available from society: https://www.ashrae.org/membership–conferences/benefits

We also have another tremendous technical program ready for this meeting. We’ll have Jay Eldridge speaking on Fan Efficiency Grades, and Jerry Williams speaking on System Pressure Calculations for Proper Fan Sizing and TAB Report Correlation. I look forward to seeing you on November 9th!

Jim Rosick, Chapter President

Next Meeting Invitation

Jay Eldridge of Applied Air Systems, presents “Fan Efficiency Grades” in the Technical Session and Jerry Williams of 8760 Engineering presents “System Pressure Calculations for Proper Fan Sizing and TAB Report Correlation.”
The Tech Session provides an update on the Fan Efficiency Grades (FEGs) that are included in ASHRAE 90.1-2013, mainly what they are, and how they will affect an engineer’s fan selection. The Main Session will build on the topic of maximizing fan efficiency by considering both the fan and the system it is integrated into. The presentation will include a review of the total pressure calculations needed to establish the required fan performance and selecting the correct fan from a fan industry grounded in fan static pressure ratings.

Student Scholarships

Society scholarship applications are due December 1st. Please encourage any undergraduates interested in the HVAC&R industry to apply. Through its scholarships, ASHRAE seeks to motivate students and prospective students worldwide to pursue a career in the HVAC&R field. The Society’s Scholarship Program also serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice as engineers in HVAC&R.

“In the Spotlight” Company Highlight

Would YOU like to be featured in our newsletter? St. Louis ASHRAE would like to highlight a firm in our chapter’s territory. This is a great opportunity to get the word out about what your company does and how you contribute to our local industry.

Women in ASHRAE

The ladies in Women in ASHRAE (WiA) met October 29th for a happy hour at Bonefish Grill in Brentwood to discuss the future of the group and where they’d like the group to go from here, as well as challenges faced as women in the HVAC&R industry. Events will be held quarterly going forward, so if you’re a woman in HVAC&R and interested in joining, let Jessica Mangler (jmangler@rossbar.com) know!

2017 CRC Committee Update

The CRC-2017 Committee met again and we are well ahead of schedule. We have contracted with the Hyatt Regency at the Arch to host the event. Speaker selections have just about been completed. Three “Grand Slam” sponsors have stepped up to the plate as well. We are still seeking volunteers to help with putting it all together. Contact Brian Ingenthron if you are interested in helping!

Call for Volunteers!

A number of student chapters are seeking presenters on ASHRAE-related topics for their chapters. The student branches are SIU-E, SIU-C, Missouri S&T, and the soon to be established University of Missouri. This is a great way to connect with up and coming engineering students! If you are interested, please contact the Student Activities Chair, Danny McGrail, at dmcgrail@rossbar.com.
