For over 3 decades, Mr. Hubbard has been part of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency Business (formerly YORK), which provides commercial, industrial and institutional air conditioning systems, controls and service. He is a noted expert on energy and energy calculations and has authored numerous articles on energy topics for publications that include ASHRAE JOURNAL, AIPE FACILITIES, ENGINEERED SYSTEMS, HEATING PIPING and AIR CONDITIONING, The AIR CONDITIONING HEATING and REFRIGERATION NEWS, and PLANT ENGINEERING to name a few. His comments and opinions are sought frequently by editors of these and other leading, building-industry publications.
Based in York, Pa., Mr. Hubbard travels extensively to present customer seminars and speak before industry and professional groups. He has prepared white papers and presented them to the International District Energy Association (IDEA) in 1997 on Chiller-Plant Energy Performance, in 1998 on Low-Flow Condenser Systems, and again in 1999 on Application of ARI Standard 550/590-98 in Multiple Chiller Plants. He is a member of ASHRAE, IDEA and AHRI (Air Conditioning Heating & Refrigeration Institute). He is a voting member of ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1 committee since 2010. For 10 years, he lectured on chiller system energy at the University of Wisconsin’s Chilled Water Plant Course. In 2002, he represented Johnson Controls (YORK) on the History Channel’s production of “Modern Marvels – Fire and Ice.”
In his current position, created in 1997, Hubbard is responsible for bringing the company’s water chiller solutions to the global market, and for advocating advanced practices in energy-efficient chiller plant design. From 1992 to 1996 he was marketing manager for JCI’s (YORK’s) Global Chiller Conversion and Retrofit Business as well as the company’s Multistage Compressor and Chiller Systems Businesses.
Between 1988 and 1992, Hubbard was the Zone Sales Manager for Georgia. During this time he developed a proprietary software program — YorkCalc — that calculates the cost of operating different chiller plants, and allows comparisons among systems and fuel sources. He is the architect of the current Windows-based version of the program used globally by JCI’s sales forces and customers.
Hubbard had focused on chiller system energy and life cycle cost of operating a chiller system in the Healthcare vertical market as JCI’s Hospital Segment Manager from 1985 to 1988. In this position, he was responsible for focusing on the healthcare market in North America and insuring that JCI’s (YORK’s) products and services met with the requirements of this energy intensive customer base.
Hubbard originally joined Johnson Controls (YORK) in 1980 as a Sales Engineer in New York City, a position he held through 1984. He was named sales “Rookie of the Year” in 1981 and achieved status as one of the “Top 10″ Salesmen in North America in his first year of selling. Hubbard received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1974 and completed five years of military service before joining Johnson Controls (YORK).
