Bill Belt (b. September 3, 1920 in Topeka, Kansas) passed away on the evening of June 24, 2015 in St. Louis County, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents: Everett Ray Belt, Sr. and Margaret Mae, nee Puckett, his brothers: Everett Ray, Jr, Donald, and Robert, his sister, Betty Johnson, and one son-in-law, Daniel Haberl. He is survived by his wife, Judy St. John Belt, his children: Lida Baker (David), William A. Belt Jr. (Debbie), Marian Newmann (Michael), Elizabeth Haberl, Erin Graziano (John), Heidi Crouch (Jerry), and Kathleen Denney (David), twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and a wide and diverse extended family.
Bill graduated from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, MO in 1937. He was an avid football player during his high school years and took great pleasure in the annual Turkey Day pre-game breakfast for football alumni. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy as a Machinist’s Mate, 2nd class. Following the war, he attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. For nearly sixty years, Bill worked designing mechanical systems for buildings throughout the St. Louis area, including the waterfall that the train runs behind at the St. Louis Zoo. He served on the St. Louis County Planning Commission in the 1960’s and was a member of The American Society Heating, Refrigerating, Air Conditioning Engineers, ASHRAE. To say Bill was an avid golfer and thoroughly enjoyed the game would be an understatement. He often marshaled for professional tournaments and played in a weekly golf league until his health declined. Please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in his name.
