Evolution of Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems

From enthalpy wheels to dual DOAS

Learning Objective #1 – Enthalpy wheel basics – realizing different types of wheels are in the market place with varying construction and performance

Learning Objective #2 – Dual heat exchanger operation – Covering dual wheel, single wheel with heatpipe, and wrap around to show evolution to dedicated outside air

Learning Objective #3 – Dual wheel dehumidification systems – Looking at more current technologies with regards to decoupling not only the outdoor load, but also the indoor latent load.

11:45am – 1:00pm Lunch and Main Session

Chilled Beam Application

The application of chilled beams in the United States market initially was through duplication of the European approach. It is well known that the climate of the United States is more humid than the Scandinavian countries that have embraced the technology for the past few decades. In the meantime, the design community in the United States developed the decoupling approach, using dedicated outside air systems (DOAS) to eliminate both outdoor as well as indoor humidity loads. The marriage of these two technologies has yielded highly efficient building systems that have exceeded ASHRAE 90.1 by more than 30% with little to no first cost impact through the downsizing of the overall plant requirements.

Learning Objective #1: A focus on humidity in lieu of temperature. Utilizing 350-400 sq ft per ton, 20° delta T, etc. are the rules of thumb that handles temperature, but what about humidity? Also, is this the most energy efficient means to achieve building IAQ and comfort?

Learning Objective #2: There is more than one configuration of DOAS. This presentation will cover three similar, but different manufacturer approaches. The key for the engineer is to ensure that the performance of the system will maintain its performance regardless of the outdoor and space conditions to minimize the liability of the design community, regardless of the end device the DOAS is serving.

Learning Objective #3: A brief overview of chilled beams and their implementation in lieu of more traditional approaches such as heat pump, fan coil, and VAV in order to re-introduce their benefits as the end device of choice for energy efficient building design.
