TECHNICAL SESSION

“Fan Efficiency Grades” by Jay Eldridge

This presentation provides an update on the Fan Efficiency Grades (FEGs) that are included in ASHRAE 90.1-2013, mainly what are they, and how will they affect an engineer’s fan selection.  The presentation will also include pointers on optimizing fans selections for low energy use and complying with 90.1.

 About the Speaker:
Jay Eldridge is the Applied Air Systems Development Manager for Daikin Applied. He has 25 years experience in the application and design of applied HVAC systems. His current responsibilities include optimizing and working with applied air sytems, but he has an extensive background in chiller and heat pump systems.

Jay is an ASHRAE member and served as the chair of the District Energy (TC 6.2) technical committee and is a member of the Large Building Air-Conditioning Systems (TC 9.01)  committee. He is also a corresponding member of the Fans technical committee (TC 5.1). Jay has a degress in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University.

LUNCH SESSION

“System Pressure Calculations for Proper Fan Sizing and TAB Report Correlation”  by Jerry Williams

This presentation will build on the topic of maximizing fan efficiency by considering both the fan and the system it is integrated into. The presentation will include a review of the total pressure calculations needed to establish the required fan performance, selecting the correct fan from a fan industry grounded in fan static pressure ratings, a review of the role of system effect factors in fan system sizing and design, and finally how a testing and balancing report should acknowledge and describe fan system effects encountered.

About the Speaker:
Gerald J. (Jerry) Williams has been Senior Vice President and Principal with 8760 Engineering since 2009. Previously, Jerry spent 34 years with McClure Engineering Associates, serving as President from 2000 through 2008. Mr. Williams has over 40 years of experience in the design, analysis, and commissioning of HVAC Systems. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University and is a Registered Professional Engineer in six states.

Jerry has been project engineer, project manager, and principal on major building designs, energy studies, system retrofit projects and energy master plans. Jerry has participated in the training of National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB) testing and balancing technicians. He has also served as an affiliate professor
of Mechanical Engineering at Washington University, where he received the Alumni Achievement Award in 2009. Jerry has also served on the Editorial Advisory Board for HPAC Engineering magazine since 2003. Mr. Williams has authored 1 book and numerous technical articles for trade publications, many of which have centered on air handling system technology. Mr. Williams joined ASHRAE and the St. Louis Chapter in 1972. From 1982 through 1990, he was a principal lecturer and co-author of the ASHRAE Professional Development Seminar Series entitled “Air System Design and Retrofit for Energy/Cost Effectiveness”. In 1991, Mr. Williams was the recipient of a National 1st place ASHRAE Technology Award for the “Surgery Fan Systems Retrofit” at the St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Jerry served on the Board of Governors of the St. Louis Chapter ASHRAE from 1989 through 1996, serving as Chapter President in 1995-1996. In 2000, Jerry was the recipient of the Hermann F.
