Tech Session (50 minutes)
Advances in Technology and the AEC Industry Presented by Tom Phoenix
Technology changes and advances literally every day; and, just in the last generation, these advances have completely transformed the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. This program will look at some of the history of advances in technology and how these advances have changed the AEC industry. The program will also discuss how new technologies will affect the future of our industry.

Thomas Phoenix is a Principal with the Architectural/Engineering firm of Clark Patterson Lee (CPL) at their office in Greensboro, NC, USA. He has a B.S. degree in engineering from NC State University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina and six other States and has over 30 years of experience in the design, operation and maintenance of building mechanical systems.
Mr. Phoenix has been an active member of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) since 1982, and was elevated to the grade of Fellow in 2011. He is an ASHRAE Presidential Member,having served as Society President in 2014-15. He previously served terms on ASHRAE’s Board of Directors as Society Treasurer, Society Vice President, as a Director at Large, and as Director and Regional Chairman of Region IV. His past ASHRAE activities also include serving as the Chair of ASHRAE’s Members Council, and as the Chair of numerous ASHRAE committees and task groups. Mr. Phoenix is an ASHRAE certified Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP). Mr. Phoenix is active in his local community. He is a graduate of Leadership Greensboro, a member of the Leadership Greensboro Alumni Association and a past member of the Board of Trustees for the Greensboro Children’s Museum.
He is a Charter Member and Past President of the Gate City Rotary Club. He served as a Committee Chairman for the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic for Cancer Research for 19 years and was a leader with local Boy Scouts of America Troop 101.
He is married to the former Rebecca Champion, and he and Becky have two children.

The ASHRAE Digital Lighthouse and Industry 4.0
President Chuck Gulledge will be presenting on his theme for the 2020-21 ASHRAE Society Year is “The ASHRAE Digital Lighthouse and Industry 4.0.”
“Why should we engage in digital transformation? To gain a competitive advantage amongst our peers, position ourselves as the go-to resource for clients, improve margins, provide greater value, and attract and retain a digitally skilled workforce.”
Charles E. Gulledge III, PE, HBDP, LEED AP is the 2018-2019 ASHRAE Treasurer, serving on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. As the Society Treasurer, he currently chairs the Finance Committee. He is a former ASHRAE Vice President and Director-at-Large. Gulledge has served as past Chair of the Development Committee, ASHRAE 2011 Energy Modeling Conference, Chapter Technology Transfer Committee, and Technical Committee 7.1: Integrated Building Design. He has served as member of the Handbook Committee, CTTC-RVC for Region IV, President of the North Piedmont Chapter, and as the ASHRAE Liaison to the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). Gulledge has received the Exceptional Service Award, Distinguished Service Award, Regional Award of Merit, Chapter Service Award, and the Dan Mills Technical Award.
In his role as the liaison to CSI, Mr. Gulledge was intimately involved in the overhaul of the MasterFormat 2004 (MF04) specification organization structure. He was a MasterFormat Accredited Instructor for CSI. Mr. Gulledge has presented multiple presentations on the Integrated Design Topic as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and an ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) Instructor. He has provided outsourced ALI instruction to organizations such as the New York City Transit Authority and NAVFAC.
Additionally, he participated as a speaker for the ASHRAE Satellite Broadcast on Integrated Building Design. Mr. Gulledge is a Senior Mechanical Engineer with the design/build firm of Environmental Air Systems, LLC in High Point, NC. He has over 34 years of experience in the HVAC industry. A licensed professional engineer in the states of North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama; he received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
