Tech Session and Main Session:
Ammonia Refrigeration System Overview, Construction, and Codes
The technical and dinner sessions will discuss types of ammonia refrigeration systems in use today that are being installed in the USA. Mr. Piho will also discuss codes that govern the installation of an ammonia system including IBC, IMC, IFC, and IIAR. This will include piping, ammonia detection and alarms, and building construction. He will also touch on the regulatory requirements of EPA, OSHA, and Homeland Security.

Speaker for Tech and Main Session: Jack Piho
Owner – Piho Engineering
Jack has worked over 30 years in the refrigeration industry doing design and application including pharmaceutical, chemical, dairy, food storage, food processing, equipment design, HVAC, test facilities, and shipboard applications. He started his career at York International designing test facilities and shipboard equipment. He then worked at St. Onge Ruff & Assoc. as the Director of Refrigeration Engineering where he had responsibility for a group that designed industrial refrigeration systems. He is now the owner of Piho Engineering designing industrial refrigeration and ventilation systems. He has been involved with OSHA Process Safety Management and EPA Risk Management Program for over 25 years, completing numerous programs.
He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and York College of Pennsylvania with a degree in Engineering Management. He is a registered professional engineer in numerous states. He is a member of ASHRAE, RETA, IIAR, NSPE, NFPA, ICBO, and other organizations. He has served on IIAR committees including Standards, Code, PSM, and Valve. He a past Director of the IIAR Board.
Jack has authored several papers on Design Codes and Applications, Setting Flow Rates of Expansion Devices, Freezing Systems, Floor Warming of Refrigerated Facilities, History of Ammonia Refrigeration, and Overview of PSM. He has authored numerous industry articles in trade journals on code, design, and application problems and their solutions.
He has been a guest lecturer on various topics including PSM development, alternate refrigerants, industrial refrigeration system design, and others. He developed and presented a Basics of Refrigeration course for operators. He has been an instruction at the IIAR Workshop covering building and refrigeration system design.
