Hosted in partnership with USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter, International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories St. Louis (I2SL), and the ASHRAE St. Louis Chapter (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).
In this session LEED Fellow Doug Pierce will discuss the USGBC RELi design standard which is an actionable checklist to help designers create resilient communities, buildings, and infrastructure to withstand shock.
The world around us is becoming increasingly volatile, unpredictable and complex.
RELi and Resiliency extends sustainable design into the emergent realm of adaption addressing extreme events driven by climate change, social tension and planetary scale environmental transformation.
Resilient design is important for any business or institution, but particularly those that place value on maintaining business and service continuity during or immediately after a crisis event, or periods of extended turbulence. RELi is a comprehensive list of actions for buildings and districts addressing the near-term shocks of emergencies and hazardous events, along with mitigating long-term stressors and improving social cohesion to aid with post-event bounce-back.

- Identify and discuss the design and engineering strategies included in RELi and relevant to Resilient Design.

Douglas Pierce, AIA, LEED® Fellow, RELi AP, Global Resilient Design Director and Architect at Perkins+Will Minneapolis; Adjunct Professor in Practice, University of Minnesota, College of Design; Chair USGBC RELi National Steering Committee; Associate ASHRAE.
Doug is a pioneering architect, speaker and writer with a passion for integrating art + science through poetic innovation. He has over 35 years of experience in sustainable / resilient design that includes planning, architecture and policy work. He has led the conceptual design and LEED planning for multiple certified projects including one of the Upper-Midwest’s very first LEED Platinum Certified projects, Great River Energy Headquarters, an AIA National COTE Top 10 Green Project and one of the first 2030 compliant project in the country. He was technical lead for the Climate Ready DC adaptation plan, winner of a 2017 C40 Cities/ Bloomberg Philanthropies International “Citie4Tomorrow” award.
Doug is now defining a new integrative framework for sustainable design through development of the RELi Resiliency Action List and National Consensus Standard. RELi was launched in 2014 and adopted by the USGBC in 2017 as part of their family of standards. He is currently working on ground breaking projects like solving for Sea Level Rise in Miami Beach, Florida and defining the design needs of Net Zero Cities in Iowa, Rochester Minnesota and Asia.
