Thermos Newsletter – September 2016

Letter from the President
Chris Swallow, Chapter President
Chris Swallow, Chapter President

Well it’s that time of the year again, and I am not talking about Rams Football!  The Rams may have picked up and moved to LA but the STL ASHRAE chapter is here to stay!!  We are going to kick off the season as we always do with our Past Presidents meeting on September 12th.  As always, past presidents are invited to this meeting free of charge.  We’ll also present a special honor to our most recent past president, Jim Rosick.

I want to take a quick moment to thank a few folks for their dedication to the St. Louis Chapter.  Jessica Mangler whom has served on the BOG for the past few years has taken a new position with a firm in Seattle, Washington.  Jessica dedicated a lot of time and efforts to the Chapter during her time on the board.  The STL chapter recently obtained the highest number of PAOE points in our region due in part to a record number of points earned from Jessica’s efforts in research promotion.  We all wish Jessica the best in her new endeavors and we will keep a seat on the BOG warm for her if she ever decides to return to St. Louis.

Another member of the chapter I would like to recognize is Vinny Stanec.  Vinny graciously accepted the position of the Summer 2016 Meeting Chair several years ago, and he did not disappoint.  He assembled a great team of local ASHRAE members to put together a wonderful program this summer.  We have received nothing but positive feedback from the local, regional, and national level.  A big thank you to all the volunteers, session chairs, tour guides, etc. that made this event possible.  Most importantly to Vinny, this was a tremendous undertaking.  You did something the Rams never could, you not only took the ball across the goal line, but you spiked it, did a celebratory dance, and then took it back in for an extra two points.  The St. Louis chapter is extremely grateful for all your efforts over the past few years.

Grant Irvine has a great program line up in the works for this upcoming year.  We are going to start it off right with current ASHRAE Vice President Jim Vallort.  We look forward to another great year of record attendance.  I will close with this.  We are always looking for new faces to get involved.  We currently have several committee positions we are looking for chairs including our Grass Roots and Webmaster committees.  If you are interested in helping out please talk to me or one of the other board members at the upcoming meetings.

YEA Happy Hour

Come hangout with YEA for our September social event! Unfortunately summer is coming to an end, but what better way to deal with that than to gripe with fellow industry professionals over drinks? For September YEA will be heading to 21st Street Brewers Bar. This bar offers a huge selection of both draft and bottled beer representing every local brewery (non-beer products are available, too).  The bar also offers pool tables and several other bar games, if you need to unleash your competitive side.  We hope to see you there!

All future YEA events will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month barring special circumstances, so be sure to block out the 3rd Wednesday of each month to attend our future events!

CRC Planning Update

The CRC-2017 committee is hard at work now that the ASHRAE summer meeting is in the past. The venue, speakers, and major planning is mostly done, and now we move on to covering the details. We are still seeking extra help in several areas, so if you have some time to give, please let us know. We are also soliciting sponsors for the event, either local firms engaged in the HVAC industry or national manufacturers looking for exposure to the industry. Contact Chris Pelton or myself to find out more about the various sponsorship levels.

Student Activities

Seeking Co-Chair: If you are interested in becoming more involved in our local ASHRAE chapter this is an easy, low time commitment introduction. I am seeking a Co-Chair to join me so that we can offer more assistance to the student branches.

Call for Volunteers: A number student chapters are seeking presenters for their ASHRAE student chapters. As a reminder the student branches are SIU-E, SIU-C, Missouri S&T, and Mizzou.  If you are interested, please contact the Student Activities Chair, Danny McGrail, at

Scholarships: As a reminder Society scholarship applications are due December 1st. Please encourage any undergraduates interested in the HVAC&R industry to apply. More scholarship information available at
